What is WorshipTechU?

WorshipTechU helps church leaders equip their worship and tech teams: a new training app, plus in person training, mentorship and consulting.

last checked published 7 min read

The short answer: WorshipTechU helps church leaders equip their worship and production teams so Sunday sounds clear and confident. The big new piece is the WorshipTechU app: courses on mixing, tone, miking, monitors, wireless, networks and music theory, training games that drill your ears and your hands, and real tools to practice on. It's in beta on iPhone and on Android through Google Play (the same app on both), with a companion Apple Watch app, and on the web at app.worshiptechu.ca. Alongside the app, WorshipTechU still works with churches in person: weekend intensives and six week training, a year long mentorship, and consulting like console templates, mix audits and gear reviews.

It is not WorshipU, and it is not ChurchTechU. More on that below, because the names are close and people mix them up.

Who it's for

Leaders. WorshipTechU is built for the person responsible for a team: the tech director, the worship pastor, the worship leader. The volunteers on that team learn in the app and in the room, but the leader is the one it's built to serve.

It treats the tech team and the music team as one team. The guitar player and the person at the console should be chasing the same sound and using the same words for it, so WorshipTechU teaches both sides. It started years ago as equip nights at one church, getting the front of house team and the musicians into a room together to build that shared language. The training, the mentorship and now the app all come from that.

Most teams aren't bad. They're usually just pulling in different directions. Underneath it all is one idea: the people we're serving on a Sunday are the congregation. Somebody might walk in after a rough week and this is the half hour they get. So the vocal has to be clear, and nobody should have to work to sing along.

The motto, in the words of the founder, Canyon Lewis, from the course: "Invest in people, not product."

The app: the new focus

How it teaches. Learn to hear first, then learn the buttons. The courses aim to teach you what you're listening for, starting at the source: if the tone on the stage is wrong, the console can't rescue it. Good sound is a lot of small moves done well together, not one secret setting.

Courses. 70 courses, over 900 lessons: 68 in six series, plus chart-free worship and what is worshiptechu? on their own, with a five question quiz at the end of most modules.

  • the what is? series: one idea per course. Gain, EQ, compression, gates, buses, stereo, reverb, phase, feedback, in-ear monitoring, microphones, RF, digital audio, networks, MIDI, plus the fundamentals of lights, DMX, cameras, video signals and streaming.
  • the how to series: one job per course. Tune a drum kit, mic a drum kit, quiet a drum kit, mic a pastor, mic pianos, mic a choir, coordinate wireless frequencies, build a wireless rack, handle cables, run a tech room, build a stage plot.
  • the tone series: drums, bass, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keys and vocals, plus the philosophy behind it all.
  • the mix series: sound check, gain, each instrument, then the whole mix and mixing live.
  • the theory series: the number system, keys and scales, chords, progressions, reading a chart, playing in every key, and the CAGED system for guitar.
  • vintage audio hardware: the famous old boxes and where the same tricks are hiding in your console.
  • chart-free worship, outside the series: for bands that want to get off the music stand.

Training games. Fourteen of them, including Ring It Out, Frequency Finder, Soundcheck Simulator, Monitor Mayhem, Dante Doctor, Mic Locker, Ear Training, Number Cruncher, Key Change Chaos and Fretboard Mastery. Your team can challenge each other head to head, and there's an arcade for fun.

Tools. A tuner, an SPL meter, EQ and compression cheat sheets, an EQ lab and a compression lab, a stage plot and patch designer, a lighting designer and DMX planner, a wireless frequency planner, a chord book, a string tracker and a downloads shelf with console show files.

For a whole church. One church account with a join code, member progress, assignments, announcements and leaderboards, plus team tools for leaders: playbooks, a gear locker, an incident log and the chart-free challenge. Each person can connect their own Planning Center account so the app knows when they serve and reminds them the evening before.

Getting it. The app is in beta on iPhone and on Android through Google Play. It's the same app on both, with the Apple Watch app alongside the iPhone version. To join the beta, leave your email on worshiptechu.ca/app. No phone handy? Open it in your browser at app.worshiptechu.ca.

What's free in the app

The tuner, the SPL meter, the EQ and compression cheat sheets, the string tracker, every training game, the what is worshiptechu? course and the number system course. The rest of the library and tools come with a paid plan. Plans are on worshiptechu.ca/pricing.

Training, mentorship and consulting

The app didn't replace the people side. WorshipTechU still comes to your room. From worshiptechu.ca:

  • Weekend intensives. Two or three days in your room with your actual band. Friday is listening and an audit of your signal flow, Saturday is hands on training on your own console (EQ, compression, gain, effects, snapshots), and Sunday is the launch, with service support, a final mix review and a snapshot hand-off pack. Your volunteers mix; WorshipTechU coaches. (training)
  • Six week training. Online or on site. Audio foundations and a console deep dive, then compression, gating and effects with mixing labs on real band stems, then monitors and the livestream workflow, finishing with a full service mix and shadow coaching. (training)
  • Mixing, events, templates and audits. WorshipTechU can mix your Sunday or your livestream and leave snapshots your team can repeat, run audio for conferences and worship nights or teach a workshop slot, build custom front of house and livestream console files for your band, and do ongoing check-ins: livestream mix audits with notes, gear reviews before you buy, and scheduled calls. (training)
  • Mentorship. Twelve months of hands on mentorship for worship leaders and techs who lead: a weekly 1:1, a monthly cohort, two retreats and shadow days, working on craft, people and Sunday systems. (mentorship)
  • WTU Cares. For churches that could never afford training or gear, WorshipTechU brings a weekend on site and equips gear where it matters most, paid for by people who give money or donate gear their church is replacing. (cares)

Training and mentorship are quoted per church. Ask through worshiptechu.ca/training or write to info@worshiptechu.ca.

Not WorshipU, not ChurchTechU

The names are close. Here's the difference, using each company's own site.

WorshipU is Bethel Music's worship training library. Its site describes worship courses, interviews, music lessons and song tutorials, including lessons taught at Bethel Music's annual worship school going back to 2012. (worshipu.com) WorshipTechU has no connection to Bethel Music or WorshipU.

ChurchTechU is a membership with short lessons on ProPresenter, livestreaming, YouTube, sound and video, plus live classes where you can ask questions. (churchtechu.com) WorshipTechU has no connection to ChurchTechU.

WorshipTechU is the one with the mixing and musician courses, the training games and the phone tools, plus weekend intensives and mentorship, at worshiptechu.ca and app.worshiptechu.ca. Spelled as one word: WorshipTechU.

What the app doesn't do (yet)

  • No ProPresenter or slides course yet.
  • Lighting and video are fundamentals only for now, with no how to courses.
  • It doesn't run your service: no live dashboards or slide control.

Where to start

Open what is worshiptechu? first. It's a couple of minutes and the rest of the app makes sense after it. Running sound this Sunday? Go to sound check, then gain. Playing in the band? Start with your instrument in the tone series. Want someone in the room with your team? Start at worshiptechu.ca/training.
